If the Dancer Dances

a documentary about the revival of the iconic 1968 work RainForest in conjunction with the centennial of its legendary choreographer, Merce Cunningham. Following the screening, BAM Executive Producer Emeritus Joseph V. Melillo will moderate a discussion with Wechsler; filmmaker and former Cunningham company member Lise Friedman; choreographer, dancer, and artistic director Stephen Petronio; dancer, choreographer, professor, critic, and actor Gus Solomons, jr.; and choreographer, performer, and teacher Rashaun Mitchell. RainForesthas been performed at BAM multiple times, including in 1968, 1970, 1972, and the company’s Legacy Tour in 2011.
If the Dancer Dances invites viewers into the intimate world of the dance studio, where Stephen Petronio, one of today’s leading dance-makers, is determined to help his dancers breathe new life into RainForest,an iconic work by Cunningham. With help from three members of the former Cunningham company, the film tracks Petronio’s dancers as they strive to restage this great work, revealing what it takes to keep a dance—and a legacy—alive. If the Dancer Dances is the first documentary on the subject of Cunningham’s work since his passing in 2009.
