When it comes to Congolese popular music, Nkumu Katalay can do it all—he’s a dancer, singer, drummer, percussionist, guitarist, bassist, and bandleader. Born in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nkumu is a veteran of Lokassa Ya Mbongo’s Soukous Stars, but has become a fixture in New York City, especially in Harlem. In addition to leading The Life-Long Project Band, Nkumu is a co-director of the Yam Session, a monthly collective Afro jam session, and teaches weekly high-energy Afro-Congolese dance classes.

Modern-day torchbearers of the Golden Age of Latin music, Brooklyn-based ensemble Los Hacheros revives folkloric styles like son montuno, guaracha, and salsa, often combining them with Bomba. The five-member group evokes the spirit of a conjunto of 12 musicians, with members singing and playing instruments ranging from the trombone to the guiro, flute, campana, and baby bass.

Hailing from Palenque, Colombia, the first free black town in the Americas, the hip-hop group Kombilesa Mi overlays traditional Colombian rhythms and instruments with lyrics in both Spanish and the local language, Palenquero. The result is an electrifying fusion of Palenquero music and urban rap. Proud of their heritage and passionate about music, Kombilesa Mi (Palenquero for “my friends”) represents the voice of a new generation of Colombian musicians.

Caique Vidal and Batuque (meaning “to drum”) brings infectious energy and riveting dance grooves, delivering explosive performances that integrate the sounds of Afro-Brazilian percussion with keyboards, bass, guitar, and horns, producing an innovative version of samba, reggae, salsa, bachata, pop, rock, and Bossa Nova. Vidal and Batuque just released their debut EP titled TYSM (Thank You So Much), which exemplifies the diversity of rhythms and genres performed by the band during their live shows. Born in Salvador, Bahia, Caique Vidal is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and music educator steeped in the Afro-Brazilian tradition. Professionally, Caique began working with the Balé Folclórico da Bahia in 2002. For nine years, Caique toured internationally with the group, showcasing Afro-Brazilian culture and traditions in countries like the United States, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Colombia, Venezuela, and others.
The evening is presented in collaboration with Brasil Summerfest, a two week long festival founded by Petrit Pula, which showcases a selection of Brazilian artists ranging from traditional to contemporary styles.

YUNIOR TERRY & SON DE ALTURA

Regarded as one of New York City’s most sought after bass players, Yunior Terry is recognized for his big sound, versatility, and contagious rhythm. As the youngest son of one of Cuba’s most gifted musical families “Los Terry’s,” Yunior followed the tradition and began his musical training at age seven. Soon after graduation he joined the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Yunior was a recipient of the Van Lier Fellowship in 2009 and has performed with Steve Coleman, Jerry Gonzales and Fort Apache, Lila Downs, Jeff Tain Watts, Eddie Palmieri, Hilton Ruiz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Steve Turre, Jane Bunnett, and his brother Yosvany Terry, among many others. Terry’s own band, Son de Altura, was created to innovate as well as to preserve the legacy of Cuban music.
The evening is presented in collaboration with the Center for Cuban Studies, a non-profit educational institution with a national membership, base organized by a group of scholars, writers, artists and other professionals with a purpose to counter the effects of U.S. policy toward Cuba. Founded in 1972 and located in Dumbo, the Center is dedicated to providing information about contemporary Cuba and contributing to a normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States, including an end to the embargo. The Cuban Art Space is incorporated within the Center for Cuban Studies to promote the work of Cuban artists, especially those living and working in Cuba, and to educate the U.S. public about Cuba’s cultural life.

Inspired by the Big Band Era of Jazz, Dandy Wellington and his Band have taken the sounds of the 1930s and 40s and created a world of well-dressed music. With a passion for obscure songs steeped in the jazz tradition, Dandy Wellington has assembled a catalog of music from the golden age of cinema to the bounce of New Orleans that invokes an atmosphere of class. A bandleader, entertainer, event producer, and creative consultant, born and raised in Harlem, New York, Dandy Wellington epitomizes the undeniable cool of the Jazz Age, while also bringing a progressive perspective befitting of the ever-changing landscape of our modern lifestyle.
ALSARAH & THE NUBATONES

Alsarah & the Nubatones was born out of many conversations between Alsarah and Rami el-Aasser about Nubian ‘songs of return’—modern migration patterns and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt. Inspired by both the golden age of Sudanese pop music of the 70s and the New-York effervescence, Alsarah & The Nubatones have built a repertoire where an exhilarating oud plays electric melodies on beautiful jazz-soul bass lines, and where sharp and modern percussion breathe new life to age-old rhythms.

Say She She is a Brooklyn/London based female-led soulful eight-piece band, named as a silent nod to Nile Rodgers’ Chic. The band features classic girl-group style harmonies with an injection of reggae beats and Bollywood discodelic sounds.
Seven-time Grammy nominated producer Rashad Ringo Smith is one of the original Hit Men at Bad Boy Entertainment. The man behind Eric B and Rakim’s “Dont Sweat The Technique”, Busta Rhymes’ “Whoo-Ha!”, Notorious B.I.G’s “One More Chance” Remix and LL CooL J’s “Doin’ It”, Smith’s musical innovations form an integral part of the fabric of hip hop as we know it today. With a personal collection of over 25,000 records ranging from Rare Soul, Funk, Jazz, Afro-Beat, House, Techno, Electro, Tropicalia and Disco, Rashad Ringo Smith pulls sounds from all corners of the recording industry. His numerous New York residencies in the 90s from the Apollo Theatre to Santos Party House led him to becoming the resident tour DJ to Q Tip, Busta Rhymes, QuestLove, and currently Erykah Badu.

The Good Folks are an indie collective hailing from New York City. Established in 2016 by high school best friends (and unofficial brothers), Clive Baird and Corey Powell, The Good Folks pull from a diverse collection of influences, ranging from Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye to Jacob Banks and Dermot Kennedy to develop their unique sound that encompasses a blend of traditional blues and soul melodies coupled with today’s modern approach to production. The Good Folks released their first EP, Vol. 1 in December 2016 followed by Vol. 2 in November 2018, via TuneCore. Along with their second EP release came their first ever visual for crowd favorite, “Leave Me (Alone).” The Good Folks has been a TuneCore artist since 2016.
